Title: Organizational Purpose: A Mixed-Method Approach to Conceptualization, Categorization, and Exploration
Authors:

Executive Summary (Abstract): This research explores how organizational purpose affects both individuals and performance, addressing two key questions: (1) What makes a purpose statement impactful for people? and (2) How does purpose influence performance?
Using a mixed-method approach, the study combined qualitative analysis of purpose statements with a quantitative survey among employees of a major tech company in Portugal. The qualitative phase assessed how purpose statements express aspiration, transformation, and passion, revealing varied interpretations and highlighting the complexity of crafting meaningful statements. The quantitative phase confirmed that a strong sense of purpose improves job satisfaction and perceived individual performance — with job satisfaction acting as a key mediator.
Overall, the findings show that well-crafted purpose statements can enhance employee experience and performance, underscoring the strategic relevance of purpose in organizations.
